Architectural Design — Doug Aitken: Transformer

Ida Bay, Huon Valley, Tasmania, Australia. Ongoing.
Role: Lead architectural designer, Project Manager
Design of a site-specific, permanent architectural installation — a subterranean sequence of mirrored chambers embedded in the landscape. At its core is a sky-facing, kaleidoscopic hall of reflections, surrounded by a network of spatial “lenses” that frame and distort the natural environment. As light and weather shift, the installation merges architecture and wilderness into a continuously transforming perceptual experience. The project also includes the development of a visitor center and amenities, establishing the site as both a destination and a gateway to the surrounding Tasmanian landscape.
